Our Reconciliation Commitment in Canada

Embedded in the many Territories and Treaty areas on which Aon operates are the histories, cultures and traditions of Indigenous groups across Canada. 

As recommended by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s (TRC) Calls to Action, Aon acknowledges with gratitude the original inhabitants of the lands we reside on, work on or are visiting — generations past, present and future — for sharing your homelands with our firm. 

Our Commitment

Aon is committed to progressing the path of Reconciliation in a meaningful way, in partnership with Indigenous Peoples, and we are dedicated to fulfilling our role and responsibilities in this regard. Our actions will be informed by: 

Specifically, to demonstrate this commitment, Aon is taking steps towards responding to Call to Action #92 which calls upon the corporate sector in Canada to “adopt the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as a reconciliation framework and to apply its principles, norms, and standards to corporate policy and core operational activities involving Indigenous peoples and their lands and resources.”

Our Work with Indigenous Peoples

For more than 40 years, Aon has been providing insurance and risk management solutions specifically designed to meet the unique needs of Canada’s First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities. We believe mutual success is anchored in relationships based on trust and respect.

Aon formed the Indigenous Services Group (ISG) in 2006 to provide risk management solutions for Indigenous communities, associations, economic development corporations, tribal councils, education authorities, governments and health services across Canada. We currently work with approximately 45 percent of the Indigenous communities across Canada as our clients. In partnership, we continue to support the Indigenous communities in developing sustainable solutions from an Indigenous perspective. 

We work in collaboration with Indigenous communities to ensure that the health and safety and property within their respective Nations and communities are protected for current and future generations.

Indigenous Peoples Employment 

At Aon, we believe that diverse, inclusive teams produce better insight, better solutions and ultimately the best outcomes for clients and the firm’s long-term success, and we are focused on being a firm that is representative of the communities in which we operate.

We are committed to providing viable employment opportunities for Indigenous graduates through our internship programs. There are a number of internships and New Grad roles offered in Canada every year and our goal is to ensure that at least 20 percent of these positions are designated for new Indigenous hires.   

Certification, Awareness and Advocacy

Aon is working with the Canadian Council for Indigenous Business (CCIB) and its Partnership Accreditation in Indigenous Relations (PAIR) program, to achieve PAIR certification. Step one includes accessing and providing Indigenous cultural awareness training to all Aon colleagues in Canada. As we achieve different levels of PAIR certification, we acknowledge and promote our continued commitment to this certification. 

Aon continues to support and create awareness by acknowledging and participating in culturally significant days as part of the firm’s Aon’s Global Inclusion Calendar, including National Indigenous Peoples Day and Orange Shirt Day. Aon also virtually observed International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples (IDWIP) in August 2022.

To support these efforts, Aon colleagues continue to participate with our Indigenous client communities for example at cultural celebrations where sharing and learning opportunities to listen to stories, learn from Elders impacts our greater understanding and appreciation for Indigenous culture and languages across Canada.
